Garden Design Project – Part 5

Today’s post is all about the bespoke cabin that I had created for my new outdoor studio! It was one of the most exciting parts to watch as it has been a little dream of mine for quite some time. As a print & pattern designer, who is heavily influenced by nature, to be able to sit amongst the flowers really is a dream come true.

I came across Churchill Sheds (who also run Liverpool Log Cabins) during January 2017 & spoke with David at their office who was extremely helpful & explained all of the different options that they could offer. I weighed up various possibilities but luckily as they were able to create a cabin from scratch for me I could specify exactly what I wanted. For example, I needed it to be insulated for all year round use, fitted with electrics & a switchboard to power the sockets & to light the cabin itself. The electrical supply would also power the LED spotlights that we had planned in for around the garden.

They visited the garden on a few occasions to make sure the measurements were accurate & that I was happy with the size of the interior frame they had built. At this stage we realised we couldn’t take the cabin as close to the exterior parameter as we would like without making it a peculiar shape. Our garden runs straight on one side, but on the opposite side it gradually narrows towards the back making it quite tricky to accommodate. I opted for a corner style & luckily they could cater for a bespoke size as we didn’t seem to have a big enough area left by our landscapers for the 3m x 4m specification & I had to sacrifice having a bench area too. After the problems we had encountered with the landscapers this really seemed like a minor issue in our eyes as there had been far worse things that we had experienced with them. Ian adapted to the new dimensions without fuss & delivered the cabin in various pre-made sections. When they arrived on the day of the fitting, the team of four really did have it up in no time & the roof was laid & made water-tight. I’d specifically asked for dark slate hexagonal roof shingles & David sourced these for me – it was a fiddly & tricky task for them to do but they did a great job & it looks so much better than your typical standard felted roof. It also connects with the colour of the tiles on our house & conservatory so the whole garden style looks coherent.

Their electrician Paul was very helpful & efficient & fitted various sockets for me. I probably did ask for far too many but as the room is going to be used for various purposes, from painting & drawing to styling & photography, it was hard to pin point exactly where I’d be sitting at any given point.

The lads at Churchill Sheds, were really helpful & listened to what I wanted & offered advice for things that I’d not even considered. Leanne at the office was always very lovely & accommodating, so I’d like to thank them for everything. We are so grateful when people deliver what they promise & I wanted to really give them recognition within this feature*.
