The Diversity in Surface Pattern Design I’ve been sat thinking about my book content & drafting ideas for my sister company global online design school Make it in Design too & these past 12 months have been a whirlwind! What I love about the surface pattern industry is no two days are the same. I’ve designed for greeting cards to fashion, worked on giant sculptures for city centre exhibitions through to designing for TV production & everything in between… Over the past few months I’ve had two shows that I filmed for air, the first being on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, where I gave design tips for the viewers on how to personalise & beautify the humble shed, which naturally included lots of pattern & colour! The 2nd was award winning Channel 4 daytime TV show Find It Fix Flog It. I was asked to design a truly bespoke fabric for presenter Simon O’Brien & his chair idea & I was also asked to create a bespoke fabric with an authentic 70s vibe for a campervan restoration for a later episode. Here’s a snippet of the chair project (I’m even wearing my own fabric design on my top!) I love that I get to share all this insight with the Make it in Design students as I teach about the many possibilities available for designers, from launching product labels to licensing & bespoke commissions the list is endless. I just love this industry! Up to 50% off sale! Make it in Design have just extended their cyber sale, but it must end soon, there’s 35% off all self paced single courses & a whopping 50% off bundle deals!
