That time I used over 50 patterns in one project!

We recently shared a #throwbackthursday post on Instagram about the time I designed & printed this completely bespoke floor vinyl with over 50 of my patterns! You can read much more about the full design process on my blog.

I thought today I’d share a few insider tips on working on such a large scale project:

Design composition
The design I chose to work with was one made up of abut 50 of my motifs & patterns which to some may seem like overkill. For me I wanted something that made a statement (since the rest of the room would be white), would inspire me on less sunny days & something that captured my colourful design style. In order to not make the design hurt the eyes, I blended busy patterns with simpler patterns & used patterns all within the same colour range.

Thoroughly consider scale
Measure, measure and measure again! The space in which I had the floor vinyl fitted wasn’t an exact shape so there was so much measuring involved. As the pattern was very busy I also had to consider how zoomed in or out I wanted the pattern (the scale) & therefore what size I wanted the overlapped circles in order to create something that was beautiful & not overwhelming for the space.

Mock-ups
In order to test the sizing I printed out multiple circle sizes & laid them out on the floor for visual context. I also created a 2D rendering of the room & mock up the design to the dimensions. Mock-ups are your best friend for these situations!

Have patience
This was an extraordinarily complicated design file to work with, not just because of the multiple patterns involved, but because of its large size. Sometimes it can be easy to get frustrated with the software but we would take regular breaks when this happened & come back to it fresh.

Build a relationship with the printer
We regularly spoke to our printer & asked them questions. I always hear from my students or coaching clients that they are worried about being a pain & asking too many questions. I have never found this to be the case! Your printer wants to create a product that is just as successful as you do & will typically help in any way that they can.

Would you really love to start your own product line or print project but don’t have a clue where to begin when it comes to finding the best printers & options? Do you struggle to understand product set up templates & find all the printer jargon confusing? Would you love access to my printer contacts & so much more?
