Making prints from your favourite pastime

Happy Friday! Today we are going Bingo-loco talking about Bingo inspired character design & prints! Ultimately, designing prints & the apparel that goes with it brings in a sense of whimsy & creativity that is appealing to a wide set of people. There’s nothing more liberating than creating something from scratch & whatever wide-set examples of forms & structure that has been the standard can be taken & redone differently. Therefore, taking everyday objects, like patterns on the street or the flowers on our vases, & turning it into a design that stands on itself is a work for the artist with an eye for art.

It’s interesting to see what what English fashion designer Henry Holland has done in recent years. He started out creating T-shirts with truly head-turning taglines like “I’ll tell you who’s boss, Kate Moss”. Eventually, he started designing full blown collections that show on the London Fashion Week. One of his most defining looks that got him in the spotlight was that of a bingo-patterned tops, trousers & dresses for his Fall 2011 collection. Not everybody will like the fact that they’ve got bingo balls all over the clothes but even thinking of doing something as out-of-the-box as this is showing that inspiration & imagination can definitely come from anywhere.

Hand-drawn images of cartoon characters is a huge trend at the moment. It’s has been popularised by supermodel Cara Delevingne, wearing a Simpsons printed pullover.

And in keeping with the bingo inspired prints, the retro character Afro-Dity from the online bingo site Bubble Bonus Bingo looks like she’s coming out of a disco party, but the glammed-up look of this character is a hand drawn inspiration for prints from scratch. This only goes to show that no matter where the idea comes from, there’s a way to create beautiful character design & prints!

Bingo inspired prints bring in that youthful, if not playful, attitude towards how the wearer carries themselves & also how you approach design. Making prints is so much fun because you get to express yourself in so many different ways! Just don’t forget to look at the things around you to find the print that will make it big.
